Secular Studies

  • Chicago Artists Coalition 217 North Carpenter Street Chicago, IL, 60607 United States (map)

The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to present Secular Studies, a HATCH Projects exhibition of new works by Alejandro T. Acierto, Kayla Anderson, Ali Aschman, LeRoy Bach, Blair Bogin, and Hyounsang Yoo.

In their works, each artist considers the multiple ways that the politics and power of display intersect in popular culture production. Inspired by community, Acierto interrogates national propaganda and representations of social media activism through sound and performance. Anderson takes catalog images of model homes and manipulates them through video and props to lay bare the latent desires and class anxiety embedded in the idealized material culture of domestic spaces. Aschman stages partially veiled bodies that perform constructs of femininity and personal identity. Bach conducts ensemble-based music performances negotiating expectations of the performer and audience in public space. Taking cue from Hottentot Venus Sarah Baartman, Bogin explores the allure, agency, and exploitation of female anatomy through iatromathematics. Yoo reenacts through video the Detroit, City on the Move Olympic bid, promoting migration and tourism to a desolate Detroit.

Secular Studies surveys a range of artistic strategies and interests in 19th and 20th century visual culture and its influence on social behavioral trends online and in real life. Secular Studies is curated by Sadie Woods.

You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception on Friday, March 4 from 6 - 9pm, featuring durational performances by participating artists Alejandro T. Acierto and LeRoy Bach.
